On A Personal Note... The Profile of a Writer Series and Much More

Many readers may have noticed the change in tone of this blog over the last few weeks. There is no doubt that it has become more political and less about the art of writing. As a result, the Profile of a Writer feature has been put on hold for now.

While I do hope to highlight other authors soon, as well as conduct interviews with a few of my favorites, I'm not sure exactly when that will be. At this point, I'm truly concerned about the state of Michigan, as well as the country. As a result, I'm slowly finding my voice in the political sphere. In addition, I finding it easier and easier to write about Turner Syndrome and other gender issues. As much as I don't like to admit it, Turner Syndrome affects me in a profoundly personal way each and every day. It is a part of who I am as a woman. There is little out there with regards to writing for Turner Syndrome girls and women written by women and girls who have Turner Syndrome. There may be a lot of information on the clinical features, but there is little regarding what it is actually like to live with the disorder. As a result, I feel as though I'm fulfilling a need.

There are so many issues to discuss and so little time. Please know that even though you may disagree with my viewpoint, my perspectives on world events, politics, gender issues, Turner Syndrome, and more are shared with the utmost conviction. In other words, when I share my perspective with readers, it is almost always due to the fact that I have very definite thoughts and/or beliefs on the subject matter.

Now that I have all of that out of the way, I also want to state that I do want (and need) to have fun with this blog! There are good things happening in the world, and they need to be acknowledged.

Profile of a Writer - Bob Younce

There are many reasons why this installment of Profile of a Writer was delayed for two weeks. First and foremost, I just don't know exactly where to begin with Mr. Bob Younce. I stumbled across his work by happenstance some time ago, and I was surprised to learn that he is from Mid-Michigan too. He is a full-time writer who has worn many, many hats over the years (you can read all about it on his website The Writing Journey).

Bob Younce is what I'd like to call a Writer's Writer. He loves to write about the art of writing, especially online. Those wishing to make a living writing online need to wear many hats, and Bob explains the intricate nature of his profession well. In fact, I personally need to spend more time over at his flagship blog, The Writing Journey. If you have ever had the writing bug, Mr. Younce has some wonderful advice.

This small introduction is just the beginning. I will be interviewing Mr. Younce soon, and I will be sharing it with you over the next couple of weeks.

Update on Profile of a Writer Series

While there will be no "Profile of a Writer" this week, there will certainly be one on Monday. I was waiting for an e-mail from the author I'm going to profile. If all goes well, I will have an interview along with a profile of his work. I'm looking forward to the finished product!

Also, the launch of JamsBio should be on Tuesday. I can't wait to share that body of work with everyone. It was a lot of fun to write. I'm just frustrated that I can't share it just yet.

Profile of a Writer - Jeff Bevelheimer (aka The Bird)

Today it is my pleasure to present Mr. Jeff Bevelheimer (aka The Bird). He is another author prominent on the Accentuate Writer's Forum. You will note that he has several blogs, a growing collection of articles on Associated Content, and a well-written article on American Chronicle.

While he is just getting started, he has proven himself a quick learner, a good friend in Michy's growing writing community, and funny. His insight on daily life, his humor, and his humanity shine through in his writing. Personally, I'm expecting big things!

All of his writings come highly recommended. Unlike many authors, he is very approachable. It is very easy to conjure up a conversation with him. If you are an aspiring writer looking for pure motivation, look no further.

Profile of a Writer - Phyllis Cunningham (aka Flip)

This week's Profile of a Writer highlights yet another writer I met on the Accentuate Writer's Forum. She's published several insightful online articles, and while I have not read any of her articles published in newspapers, I imagine that they are just as insightful.

She enjoys writing about issues she faces at home and in her personal life, tying it all together with humor. In fact, she likes to think of her work as in the same vein as Erma Bombeck. She is currently working on her first book. Already, Phyllis (better known as Flip) has compiled quite a collection of helpful articles that range from dealing with Macular Degeneration to ideas for Valentine's Day. In addition, she has a few short stories published on Author's Den (see below).

In addition to all of the articles and short stories that Flip has published online, she also maintains a blog entitled Flip's Water Garden Tips. It incorporates her love of writing and her love of gardening. In fact, she does not understand people who don't garden! Even if you don't garden, her blog is a great read, as is all of her work. It is fun, easy to read, insightful, and funny. She comes very highly recommended. Personally, I can't wait for a book, and I wish that I could read some of her newspaper articles.

Someone Beat Me to It!

I had planned on interviewing Michy (you can find all of her links on the right side of the page) for Associated Content, but someone beat me to it. Of course, I only have myself to blame. I'm going to have to do something a little different. Anyway, it is a good read.

You can read my writer profile of Michy here.

Profile of a Writer - The Barefoot

This week I'm profiling another Associated Content staple, the Barefoot. His writing is something that needs to be experienced first hand. He is clever without taking himself too seriously; he helps others succeed on Associated Content, yet he doesn't seem to take an avid interest in the writing of others. In other words, he defies all convention.

It appears to me that he works hard to keep it exactly that way. Personally, I can't say that I blame him. If you work hard to create your own personality, especially one similar to that of the Barefoot, it becomes hard for people to have certain expectations of you. If there are no expectations, a writer doesn't have to live up to them.

I highly recommend that you take the time to read some of his articles on Associated Content as well as his blog. It is all entertaining. You will soon learn why the Barefoot is a beloved member of the Associated Content community.

Quick Note...

After a weekend fighting insomnia, I finally posted the first writer profile. After some thought, I will be posting a new profile each Monday. While I originally wanted to do this on Sundays, I really can't stand Mondays. Maybe working on profiling various writers will help!

That's about it for now. I'll be posting more later!

Profile of a Writer - Michelle L. Devon (Michy) - Part 1

As I mentioned earlier, this is the first in a series of profiles on writers. I will contribute a new profile every Monday. When I decided to add this feature to my blog, I already knew who I wanted to profile first, Ms. Michelle L. Devon (Michy).

Before I get into profiling her work, it is necessary to provide a little background. When I first joined Associated Content in October 2006, I became familiar with Michy and her work. Indeed, it is difficult to be a contributor to Associated Content without becoming aware of Michy. She works hard to ensure everyone feels welcome at Associated Content. In fact, the website couldn't ask for a better ambassador.

The amazing thing is that Michy freely gives her time and energy to help aspiring writers (myself included). She is a published author, but she is much more than just an author. She runs a thriving business providing a variety of writing and editorial services. While she has much more lucrative opportunities at her fingertips, she continues to be a vital contributor to Associated Content.

Over the years many have asked her why she continues to contribute to Associated Content. She has stated that she continues to contribute to Associated Content due to its vibrant community of aspiring writers. In essence, she's staying because of us. In the year and half I have known her, it became apparent to me that helping others is simply a way of life for Michy. This is most apparent in her vibrant writer's forum. She lists several opportunities for those writers wishing to pursue a freelance writing career. Personally, I find the discussion amongst all of the writers thought provoking and insightful. If you have any interest at all in writing, even as a hobby, I encourage you to at least check out her forum.

In fact, it is difficult to understand Michy's work (written and otherwise) without understanding her need to help others. If you take the time to visit her various blogs and articles, you will quickly get the feeling that she has a deep understanding of human nature. You will notice that many of her blogs serve to provide other writers with the necessary tools with which to succeed. They also serve to inspire others.

Amazingly, the work below (various websites, blogs, and articles) only scratches the surface of all that Michy has produced as a writer and as an editor. While I have yet to discover all of her work myself, rest assured that I will be doing so soon. She has at least two books published and many more in the works. Sadly, I have yet to read either. There will be another profile written about her additional work at a later date. There is simply that much to cover.

If you enjoy the writing process and also love to read, I encourage you to take the time to get to know Michy's work well. You might be surprised at all that you can learn. Rest assured that you will be a better writer and a better person as a result. Please visit my delicious account here to keep up with all of Michy's online ventures.
