book_worm: Books Like The Da Vinci Code

A wonderful list of books like The Da Vinci Code. There are just so many books that I want to read - and so many more important things to do.

Of course, if I ever become serious about becoming a writer, I'm going to have to get serious about reading too.

A Rambling Ramble!

There are several things that I need to address:

1. I apologize for the writing advice links not working for those who aren't LJ members who have befriended Jena. You have to select her as a friend in order to see those specific posts.

2. I'm working on a lot of projects right now; namely, getting my life and career in order. I'm hoping to make significant progress by June 18th. Below is all I'd to accomplish:
  • Clean and organize my house from top to bottom.
  • Organize and post a significant amount of my E-Bay backlog (approx. 60-75%).
  • Better organize my job search and hopefully land some type of employment, even if it is a part time position.
  • Resume my quest to lose all of the weight I've gained after college - plus more. Ideally, I'd like to lose 8-10 lbs. per month, which is realistic.
  • Outline my writing project for the next year or two. My conversations with Jena have already helped in this aspect!
  • Plan development for personal website and TS Corner.
  • Get a better handle on my finances.
I know it appears like a lot, but I'm very determined. Even if I accomplish half of what I have placed here, it will be a start in the long process of reclaiming my life.

Here is what I'd like to accomplish in the months following:
  • Begin paying off debt.
  • Begin saving for and planning wedding (I need to start this by Sept. 15th 2006 if Brian and I still plan on getting married the same date the following year).
  • Continue researching home loans and begin saving for home (part of down payment).
  • Make some tough decisions with regards to continuing education.

FOXNews.com - Dixie Chicks' Maines Says U.S. President Owed 'No Respect Whatsoever'

FOXNews.com - Dixie Chicks' Maines Says U.S. President Owed 'No Respect Whatsoever'

I woke up this morning to this discussion on Fox News... WOW. I can't believe that I ever like the band or their music. Who do they think they are pushing their political views on their audience? That is one sure fire way to anger me - whether one's views are on the extreme right or left! Personally, I could care less what musicans, any one in Hollywood, or any other entertainer thinks with regards to politics. They have a tendency to be far removed from reality, so why should I care? I can think for MYSELF.

Brian gave me a hard time of still having some of their MP3s in my collection ("Travelin' Soldier" and "Long Time Gone"), and I thought that he was taking the whole thing way too seriously. Unfortunately, he wasn't. I really feel like sending my Dixie Chicks CDs to the landfill - where they belong. Having said that, it certainly isn't due to their political beliefs (if I did that, I'd have to throw out all of my Beatles and John Lennons albums, which, of course, I could never do). It is due to the fact that they think that they are so high and mighty - that they are better than anyone else. They evidently feel that they can shove their political views down everyone else's throats. Also, they feel that they can put down two artists that I love - Toby Keith and Reba!

In my point of view, they make it clear in the article that they feel that Reba and Toby fans are closed-minded. That couldn't be further from the truth in my case - and I hate the insinuation.

So - Miss Natalie Whatever - You can take your music and shove it! No one cares! They obviously have no respect for the Presidency (which is separate from having respect for the men who hold the office), the US, or their fans. It was people like me who helped make them stars - and it will be people like me who will send their "careers" into obscurity.

The hunt for Hoffa in Michigan!

The hunt for Hoffa heats up

I know this is silly (who really thinks that his remains will turn up at this farm after all this time), but it really is FUN to speculate - especially since I live in Michigan, where Hoffa was last seen.

Here are my theories:

1. He either fled or was taken against his will to Latin America, where he had cosmetic surgery (possibly having surgery in Cuba, and then moving elsewhere).

2. He was killed in 1976 (and possibly dismembered in a very grotesque manner) and summarily dumped in the Great Lakes. He has long been fish food.

Just a few musings as a result of a conversation with my future Mother-in-Law - who really has a morbid curiosity about all things (she knows most of the funeral directors in town - ICK! and double ICK!). I guess she is fascinated by death (she is a huge CSI fan!).

I normally wouldn't speculate about such things, but he truly had mob ties.

World Watch

Well, there has been SO much going on lately (politically, anyway), that I really haven't taken a moment to catch up. I've come across WAY too much good material. First off, I read A Blog For All every day, without question. He writes a lot about the brewing Palestinian Civil War, on-going tensions with Iran (including the role of China), and much, much more worth reading. I even have him added to My Yahoo!

Well, things have been extremely disturbing lately. He starts off by discussing China's role in Iran's quest for nukes. Let's just say that I'm not really shocked. Disturbed, not shocked. See article below.

A Blog For All: China's Playing A Very Dangerous Game

It gets worse, much worse. Mr. Lawhawk (that is his pen name) then goes on to discuss some of the new laws that are being pushed on the Iranian people.

A Blog For All: Ahmadinejad's the Real Deal

Fortunately, I'm not the only one to notice the similarities. I've also come across a really good blog entry discussing how Nazi Germany was misconstrued as extreme Right-Wing when it in reality, it was only right of the Communists regimes that were in place at the time. The writer made an excellent argument (I know it really sounds absurd when just written here, and I will try to come up with the exact article - or series of articles). Anyway, the whole point was that the extreme Left, such as Venezuela's Chavez, are essentially following the example of the Nazis. Then again, I've come across SO much on Latin America lately, it will have to be a whole other post. Many who know me know exactly how near and dear to my heart Latin America is! (Much more soon, I promise!)

Back to Iran again...

Atlas Shrugs: World War IV

In the article above, the people (or person) over at Atlas Shrugs have already given a label to all that is going on in the Middle East (Iran, Iraq, and Israel - along with the Palestinians) - nothing less than World War IV. The latest entry discusses Iran's role in the war in Iraq. Now I must confess, at this point, a few of you dear readers might be a little bit confused. What happened to World War III you say? Well, I've come across this theory before. In a lot of books, theorists consider the Cold War to have been World War III. In fact, there is a VERY good personal story that goes along with this, but I will share it later (soon, I promise!).

Now I must take a minute to state this: I sincerely hope that it does not come down to out right war with Iran. I want peace and diplomacy; however, I'm also a pragmatist. I don't see how anyone is going to be able to reason with Iran, not with the current tenants of Islamofascism that have such a death grip on that Iranian people. A lot of people (even some conservatives) would say that diplomacy would work if anyone other than George W. Bush was in the White House. I find that to be a complete load of garbage. I know that a lot of people don't stand behind Bush right now, but I am proud to do so (and I am certainly not a sheep!). In stating that I still support the President, I can't say that I agree with every policy or every action he has taken. In particular, I think that he has completely mismanaged his "image," or should I say, his relationship with the media (which will NEVER give him a far shake). Well, enough on that. Once again, that is another post (or maybe even two, considering the whole issue of illegal immigration, which I think Bush is getting exactly right!).

Back to Iran.

The next article also draws eerie parallels to Nazi Germany right before World War II. Which really disgusts me, is the way that this woman was treated by a supposed Western democracy!!! I could go on and on about this one (it particularly outrages me as a woman)!

J O S H U A P U N D I T: Ayaan Hirsi Ali - coming to America?

On a similar topic, I've come across other articles describing the increase of gang rape in areas of Germany that have a large Muslim immigrant population. I would post it, but it seems a bit too sensational to put here. Indeed, it is incredibly upsetting.

I suppose that is it for now. There is just too much death, destruction, and tyranny going on in the world right now. Sometimes I really wish that I wasn't a news hound (as my Mom and sister would describe me). I've always kept up with current events, even as a child. It is a result of this that I remember Reagan's speeches well, even though I was 8 when he left office.

Brian and I discuss the issues above often, and we share very similar points of view. While he believes that we are headed towards World War III (or IV - depending on how you look at it), he also thinks that I am a bit paranoid. I don't know if that is true or not; I just try to keep up with what is going on in the world. I truly believe that the citizens of the United State of America need to Wake Up! to the realization that we are at War - and have been since 9/11.

In Soul: Holy Blood, Holy Grail?

In Soul: Holy Blood, Holy Grail?

Ok. I just have to write an entry regarding all of this. First off, the author of this blog, Ginnie, shares my exact feelings regarding "The Da Vinci Code."

Personally, I'd love to believe that Jesus Christ was married and had a child! Why this should offend anyone, I do not know. Then again, I've touched on this particular topic before.

Right now, I'm reading "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." I know a lot of it has been disproven, but it is still a very good story. Personally, I can't really take all of the secrecy and secret societies seriously. However, once again, I'm intrigued by the idea that not only did Jesus marry Mary M, have a child, but that his descendents fought a centuries old battle for the French monarchy.

Anyway, I've convinced Brian to go "The Da Vinci Code" tomorrow night... I really hope it is worth it. It has been way too long since I've enjoyed a movie in a theater.

One Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Well, here it goes: My little rant as to all that is currently wrong with the world.

First off, let me start on a personal note:
  • I suffered a bad case of insomnia last night and finally feel asleep around 6 AM.
  • My Grandma, who I love dearly, called me at 9 AM. Fortunately, I was able to fall right back to sleep.
  • I've felt incredibly lethargic all day and didn't really get much accomplished at all.
  • The drain leading from our basement to the city sewer became clogged between the basement bathroom drain and the main basement drain. Fortunately, Brian was able to take care of it all once he came home (it wasn't really anything major).
  • Yet another day in which I did not hear from Case, Bay County, or any other potential employer.
On top of all of that, nothing seemed right with the world:
  • Paul McCartney and his wife Heather are getting separated (I truly wanted the rumors to be proven untrue!) - probably one of the saddest things to happen in Beatle history in quite some time (George's death in 2001?). Now, I normally don't follow all of the "celebrity" gossip and such (try as you might, you won't find much - if any - in my blogs), but when it involves the Beatles (Paul in particular), I do pay attention. Paul and Heather Article
  • The Dow dropped well over 200 points! That isn't doing much to get the Michigan economy out of the gutter (sewer more like!).
I know that nothing listed above is significant in the grand scheme of things, but it just seems as though when it rains, it pours!

Oh well, tomorrow is another day...

Oxygen TV Schedule

Oxygen TV Schedule

Ok, I'm ANGRY! I LOVE the Oxygen TV network. They're doing a lot to help accurately portray women in a society that over-objectifies them - and they are also doing a lot to bring honest, open discussion of sex in a society that doesn't discuss IT openly (all the while becoming overly sexualized). "Talk Sex with Dr. Sue Johanson" is an AMAZING show (which I try to catch from time to time).

With all of the GOOD that Oxygen is doing (without being TOO overtly political), why the hell do they have to honor Hanoi Jane (Jane Fonda) with her own movie marathon this weekend? It sickens me. She continues to be anti-American and she is undermining the Iraq War - just as she did a generation ago with Vietnam. Now I don't mind them showing her movies once in a while, but a movie marathon???
It appears as though they are tyring to make a political statement (but I hope that I'm wrong on that one).

Anyway, I'm pissed. Why does everything the least bit groundbreaking automatically have to have a liberal slant? I'm sick and tired of it. Why aren't conservatives going out of their way to associate with similar initiatives (and many would go far in furthering the cause)?

Beliefnet: 'The Da Vinci Code' Faith, Doubt, and the Search for Truth

Beliefnet: 'The Da Vinci Code' Faith, Doubt, and the Search for Truth

Wow. A whole series of articles and discussions regarding one of my favorite books. Definitely worth a look.

While I fully realize that "The Da Vinci Code" is certainly a work of fiction (and not even historical fiction at that), I love the thought that Jesus may have been married. What would be so very wrong with that? It would just show that He truly was as human as you or me while He was on Earth. It certainly is an amazing theory. I certainly don' t believe that we know all there is to know about Jesus Christ - and I'd love to know more about His life. As for all of the adament denials by the Catholic Church in particular, I think that their arguments are as about as much fiction as "The Da Vinci Code" itself (sorry if I offended anyone with that one). How can they pretend to know all of the definitive answers regarding the life of Jesus Christ - especially when the early Church did SO much to quiet women and anyone else who dared to go against their wishes? They certainly had an agenda to completely demonize all sex (in part for historical reasons) and women in general. All it is is DOGMA, pure DOGMA.

Your thoughts?

Jurors' verdict a triumph of reason over emotion - Yahoo! News

Jurors' verdict a triumph of reason over emotion - Yahoo! News

WOW. This editorial from US Today describes my reaction to the Moussaoui verdict EXACTLY. While I am a supporter of the death penalty in SOME cases, it was too good of an option for him. He came to this country to DIE, so why should we allow him a death similar to the one he wanted? Let's face it: All he wanted was publicity. A public execution would have given him exactly that. Now he can rot for 40 or 50 years in solitary confinement - and die anonymously.

I don't think that there is any contradiction with regards to the jury finding him eligible for the death penalty and then turning around and not giving it to him. I think they wanted more - and I believe that their decision was made on the basis of what's described in the article and what I mentioned above.

Good riddance.

Environmental and Urban Economics: The Urban Tragedy of the Commons and Wi-Fi Networks

Environmental and Urban Economics: The Urban Tragedy of the Commons and Wi-Fi Networks

Well, this post has kinda an interesting story. I was surfing - as usual - and I came across an article discussing Austin's WiFi plans. For me, it is classic Austin... It is STILL a cutting edge city regarding art, music, and technology. In other words, it is VIBRANT. After reading some of the other articles on the trash site, I decided to search more in order to come up with a more polished description of what's going on.

In my opinion, all-over WiFi would be INCREDIBLE! Not sure if it could happen or is feasible, but I would definitely make use of it if it came to Bay City.

Speaking of the City by the Bay... I have a few bones to pick. It seems as though EVERYONE has give up on it! I love this city dearly, and envision a MidWest/Great Lakes version of Austin. In order for that to happen, the city should concentrate on not only ATTRACTING new businesses and creative projects, it should take a lesson from Midland, if not team up with the city. For those who aren't from Michigan, Midland, along with Bay City and Saginaw, make up the TriCities.

Let's do a recap. Bay City is closer to the water than the other two and is doing fairly well (although we NEED employment and a new direction!). Saginaw is going to hell in a handbasket. There has been a murder just about every week - which far outweighs any crime in Midland and Bay City. Essentially, the old city of Saginaw is dying quickly. In its place, a new city is emerging surrounding Saginaw Valley State University, which is closer to Bay City. Midland, by far, is doing the best. While Bay City bid for a minor baseball team a few years ago, Midland is going to get it next year. Midland is also benefiting from never having been truly reliant on the auto industry (unlike Saginaw, and to a lesser extent Bay City).

Sorry about the rant, it is just that Bay City could do SO much better... And should take note of what's going on down the road - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

More later.
